Gary Martin's Teaching Philosophy

Students in GymAthletics and physical activity has always played an important role in my life. Through sports and physical education classes, I have not only learned the importance of a healthy active lifestyle, but I also learned many character traits that have molded me into the individual I have become.

Throughout my education, there have been many teachers and coaches who have left a lasting, positive impression on my life. I decided to become a teacher because it was a way for me to give back and leave a lasting, positive impression on the next generation of students. I wanted to teach Physical Education specifically because I enjoy helping children develop new movement skills that they can continue throughout their lifetime. I believe it is essential to teach students at a young age the importance of being physically fit and also the importance of maintaining this level of fitness throughout their lives.  I also wanted to teach physical education so that I could teach "the whole child."

In my classes, students learn life skills that are crucial when looking towards the future and becoming successful, respected adults.  Another reason is that I love to be around children and I especially like to be around a staff, a team, that all have a common but vital goal:

To impact the youth today through learning.

When I learned that that I could be compensated by doing something I love, I knew I was destined to be a Physical Education Teacher, (even though the compensation isn't very much)! By being a teacher I am able to share knowledge and experiences that were given to me out of love.

Students in GymHow do I teach those lifelong movement skills and important life skills?

It’s simple…. Camouflage Fitness and Character Education!

Camouflage Fitness and Character Education are two main tools I use to make a difference in my Physical Education program.  Camouflage Fitness enables my students to perform various exercises without being even aware that they are exercising.  The key to utilizing this tool effectively is creating lessons that are fun and engaging. In fact, so fun and engaging those students have no clue that they are performing activities that are totally heart healthy!  As far as character education, sportsmanship, teamwork, responsibility, respected, communication, and cooperation are just a few of the trademarks I hope to leave imbedded in my students. I take pride in providing an atmosphere in my gym where my students can lean freely without being afraid to try something new and help classmates try something new.

Project Fit America has given me a new way to look at designing fun and engaging lessons by diving head first into the PFA Core Curriculum and using the ideas from past PFA All Star Teachers and PFA trainers to wow my students.  I have even created some of my own PFA lessons. By working with the fitness cups, weighted hoops and the PFA outdoor fitness equipment.  Project Fit America has given me more tools to use as a way to teach my students the benefits of fitness.  I will always be indebted to Project Fit America.

Along with my teachers, PFA, my family, my wife and God have shaped and molded me into to the man and teacher that I am today.
